William and Mary Brickell
established their trading outpost at the point where the Miami Rivers flows into
Biscayne Bay.
The neighborhood of waterfront mansions spread over wide and tree-lined avenues
evolved to be known later on as the "Millionaires' Row". As the years passed,
they were replaced by tall office buildings, home to important law firms, banks,
international corporations and luxury condominium buildings started to appear.
Taking advantage of its proximity to Latin America, Brickell became a US hub for
International trade and banking, second only to New York.

In time, and around this
dynamic business environment, and the demand of luxury housing in the Miami
downtown area, was an incentive to for a second wave of new developments, mainly
of luxury condominium buildings. The background of the Bay waters, the short
distance to Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, South Beach and Coconut Grove were more
reasons for a quick development of the Brickell area.
No doubt that Brickell has
a powerful International diversity; mainly South American, but also European
cultures prevail. It might be an exaggeration to call it the "Wall Street of the
South", and in my opinion it would hurt its gentle image, but the blend of
business, leisure, enter-tainment and posh living is one of Brickell's main
attractions. A concentration of Consulates, Federal and District Courthouses,
Chambers of Commerce, banks, commercial real estate firms, foreign trade
offices, and financial services headquarters have definitely converted the area
in Florida's nervous center.
Brickell's distinctive skyline above Biscayne Bay waters has changed and
increased due to more than 4,000 new condominium units built since the year
2000. Intended to be occupied by young professionals and wealthy foreigners,
many of these new properties were snapped by speculators and investors.

This has undoubtedly put
some pressure on the Brickell real estate market; however it is evident that the
lack of land to build and the continuous affluence of buyers will eventually,
and perhaps in a shorter than expected period, absorb the surplus.
New entertainment areas have flourished at the shade of the skyscrapers. The
Mary Brickell village is a crowded focal point of night time activity, with its
assortment of bars and restaurants and upscale boutiques. Add to it the vibrant
cultural life at many venues such as the Vizcaya Museum, The Miami City Ballet,
the New World Symphony, the Florida Grand Opera, Miami Art Museum, Gusman Center
for the Performing Arts , Coco nut
Grove Playhouse and the new and grandiose Adrienne Arsht Center for the
Performing Arts, and you have all the ingredients for a great place to live.
For sports, the Miami Heat
Arena, the projected Marlins baseball stadium, for transportation the curious
and helpful Metro-Mover and the Tri-Rail Metro, the close-by Miami Port with its
cruise ships, and the Miami International Airport. And if you don't already own
a condo, 1,800 hotel rooms are waiting for your visit.
The following is a
Directory of the most important condominium buildings in the Brickell area.
